On this page, parents/guardians can find a list of suggested actions to take each month.
SEPTEMBER FOCUS: SHARE SAFETY PLAN CONCERNS
Here's what parents/guardians can do this month:
- Take a look at your school’s safety plan. You can find it on your school’s website by clicking on Menu>School Information>Comprehensive School Safety Plan. (Example: Lincoln High School’s plan)
- Compare your safety plan to this example from the San Juan Unified School District. A few things you might notice:
It’s transparent about safety data at the school (pgs. 7-9).
It lists specific actions that will be taken based on that data (p. 9).
It identifies the Behavioral Threat Assessment framework used (p. 102)
It identifies the school Behavioral Threat Assessment Team (p. 25)
It’s 116 pages (vs. San Jose Unified’s 21 pages)
- Attend your school’s Schoolsite Council meeting.
- Schoolsite Councils are responsible for creating and approving your school’s safety plan. If you have concerns about safety and/or safety plans, it’s important that you share them at the next Schoolsite Council meeting.
AUGUST FOCUS: PLANNING FOR SAFETY
What Parents/Guardians Should Know:
- The District - and State Law - require that Schoolsite Councils (SSCs) create Comprehensive School Safety Plans (CSSP).
- This is not just a layer of bureaucracy...the Comprehensive School Safety Plan (CSSP) is the plan that is used to train/inform teachers, staff and students about your school's safety protocols.
You Can Help by Asking Your SSC and PTSA:
- Does our SSC understand their role and responsibilities for creating the CSSP?
- Will they do the plan themselves or delegate it to a separate Safety Committee?
- What support is needed to create an effective and compliant safety plan that meets the needs of our school community?
Available Resource: The Educator’s Guide to Comprehensive School Safety Plans
- By intent of the Legislature, the guide should be used in conjunction with other resources in developing school safety plans. EC Section 32282(b)
- It offers step-by-step guidance on developing CSSPs and includes a template to assist in the required annual systematic planning process.
- The Why Wait Project is purchasing a copy for every school in SJUSD. Contact trudi.mccanna@gmail.com if you can volunteer to deliver a copy to your Schoolsite Council.
